Bonzie Crotty is one of Ireland's best known designers. Bonzie is an Independent Irish design label with a romantic vintage appeal. It is quickly becoming Europe's must have fashion brand, utilising modern technologies and centuries old techniques. Each piece is hand crafted at Bonzie's purpose built studios, using hand picked sumptuous textiles that are sourced from the finest mills around the World. The label is set by Aunt and Niece duo, design guro's, Yvonne and Ger who work hand in hand to achieve the looks of some of the most unique and amazing pieces.
At Flutterby, we had to find out all about Bonzie.. We couldn't resist asking the questions I'm sure you are all dying to hear..
1.
What were your childhood dreams?
As a child I always knew that I wanted to be an artist. I didn't realize at that age that it was specifically in the fashion industry, however my sister has fond memories of me creating a wardrobe by hand using curtain scraps at home for her extensive Barbie collection! (Apparently I didn't own a Barbie but I was always happy to be clothing them!) An early indicator no doubt!
2.
How did you get into the business?
I studied Art and Design in NCAD, Dublin. During my time there I chose to specialize in Fashion Design and I never looked back. A tutor on staff warned us as 1st year students that if any of us were to decide on Fashion as a career then we must be prepared to eat, sleep and breathe it! (I now know that to be very true!) It's a challenging job and you must be prepared to give it a lot of passion and tenacity however it's also a very rewarding career.
3.
Who are your inspirations?
My business partner, Ger and I are both really inspired by period costume. Our designs have a really romantic aesthetic and we both draw on the Victorian style clothing to inspire elements and base the silohuette on. Bonzie has a time worn aesthetic so basically anything antiquated or nostalgic works for us!
3.
How do you keep up with the current trends?
I would have to say that we intentionally don't!! Bonzie is an artisan brand and our currency is Romance. We deal in lace, frills, pearls and tulle with a smidge of fairy dust! Trends are set by couture designers and high street buyers. It is our hope that our work is more than distinctive and has a character of it's own as opposed to feeding from the trend trench. That said we are very lucky that the current trend for Vintage fashion and accessories just happens to embrace our own style of work too!
4.
What are your hopes and plans for the future?
Big plans, big hopes for Bonzie. I think we are both total dreamers at heart so we are always looking for the next opportunity, the next project, event to get involved in. We have recently moved into a new premises on Herietta St, Waterford, where Bonzie is available for the first time and our studio's are open to the public. Prior to this we were predominantly online so we are now in a position to meet clients personally and engage with our customers one on one! It's a really special process.
So there you have it ladies, Bonzie is very much the one and only unique and leading antique brand. Bonzie also picked up an award at this year's Irish Fashion Awards, organised by Faye Dinsmore for Ireland Most Influential Designer in Fashion!
